Hungerball

HUNGERBALL™ believes that participation in physical activity shouldn’t be defined by skill and that performance doesn’t determine enjoyment. The HUNGERBALL™ activation at the CM Games 2023 will be played in the following variation:

  • 20 minutes sessions with 15 minutes of game time
  • 3 Hungerball challenges; Soccer, Pool Noodle Hockey and Endgame played for 5 mins each
  • 3v3 with rolling substitutions
  • 6 players (2-per goal) in the arena (2 per goal)
  • Teams of up to 10 players

HUNGERBALL™ (Hia Pōro) is an award-winning concept developed in New Zealand that captures street games’ energy, imagination and inclusive values. Within the six sides of the inflatable HUNGERBALL™ arena, all ages and abilities have the opportunity to participate in variations of the game – such as football, hockey, and other ball games – while embracing a healthy competitive spirit that encourages camaraderie, teamwork and communication.

HUNGERBALL™ is fast, fun and infinite, meaning that games are designed to keep all participants, at any level, engaged, involved and included.

Game Variations

  1. Ins and outs fast rotation – 6 or 12 (if pairs) players inside, all others outside lining up, players/pairs who are scored against one goal are replaced by the player/pair at the front of the line and go back in line for another turn. Players/pairs can have more than one life e.g. can be eliminated after conceding 2 or 3 goals; this will be determined according to numbers of players in line and waiting time.
  2. Once ball touched, all players can come out
  3. Fixed period (e.g. 6-10min) – When the time is up the person with the highest difference between goals scored minus goals conceded wins
  4. Once ball touched, all players can come out
  5. Winning on points – a target is set e.g. the player who first reaches a difference of 5 points between the goals scored and goals conceeded wins the game

Elimination challenge: after everyone has played 1v1 ins and outs, an elimination round can be started. This is played the same way as ins and outs with the existing group but from now on the players/pairs who are scored out can no longer jump back into the game for this round. The game continues untill the last six face off and when everyone is scored out, the last person/pair standing in the game is the winner.

  • Ins and outs can be played with 2 or 3 goals goals per team, rotation can occur after 1, 2 or 3 goals scored against a team; number of lives to be determined based on number of players in line and waiting time.

Elimination rounds can also be played similar to Singles challenges above

  • Fixed period (e.g. 10-15 mins) 3) Winning on points difference
  • Team challenges between two large “tribes”/li>

Games between two large groups can be played inside the arena. The two entry points of the arena will be the teams’ ‘bases’. Players from each team can only enter/exit the arena from their own base, players who are waiting line up outside their team’s base. A game of 3v3 with rolling subs can be played for a fixed amount of time. When a player is scored against, they go at the back of their team’s line and another player replaces them, then the play resumes. A cross/multi sport challenge can be played by changing sports after a period of time (e.g. play soccer for 10 minutes than change to hockey or endgame) while continuing to count points for each team under the same score sheet. The tribe with the highest score after the allocated period wins.
