The aim of the event is to provide an enjoyable experience for all participants.

  • Teams will consist of 3 players on the court and 2 substitutes
  • 10-minute game
  • No Shot clock
  • No break after scoring, No half-time, No quarters

The CM Games is committed to ensuring the values of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga are upheld at all times. It is an expectation all participants will show respect for one another, respect for the rules of the game and respect for the kaupapa of our event.

Sport-related queries and/or concerns relating to each sport are made to the individual sport's Technical Commissioner. Only the coach/school representative may approach the Technical Commissioner. The Technical Commissioner’s decision is final.

Rules

  • Following each SUCCESSFUL basket or last free throw (except those followed by ball possession):
    • A player from a non-scoring team shall resume the game by dribbling or passing the ball beyond the arc uncontested
  • Following each UNSUCCESSFUL field goal or last free throw:
    • If the offensive player rebounds the ball, continue to attempt to score without returning the ball beyond the arc
    • If the defensive player rebounds the ball, they must dribble or pass the ball beyond the arc
  • Following a STEAL – dribble or pass the ball beyond the arc
  • Possession of the ball given to either team following any dead ball situation shall start/resume with a CHECK BALL (see below)
  • In the event of a JUMP BALL situation, the game shall be resumed with a check-ball for the last defensive team
  • A player is considered to be “beyond the arc” when one foot is over the arc line, the other foot may not be touching anywhere inside the arc
  • Team A player bounce passes to Team B player, Team B player bounce passes back to Team A player
  • The intention of the check is to restart play in a ‘fair’ manner
  • No rolling the ball on the ground or throwing the ball at feet
  • The referee will provide one warning to both teams if the check is deemed an intentional ‘unfair’ play
  • A 2nd offence will result in a point being awarded to the opposition.
  • These can take place during any check ball or after a successful shot — please exchange quickly
  • All fouls are followed by a check-ball except in the act of shooting
  • Shooting foul – 1 free shot for inside the arc
  • Shooting foul – 2 free shots for outside the arc
  • Unsportsmanlike fouls: 2 points to the other team and compulsory substitution (player can re-enter the game on next dead ball)
  • MOUTHGUARD is high recommended
  • These will be provided and remain on the court

Scoring and Points

  • 1 point inside arc / 2 points outside arc
  • 1 point for free throws
  • 1 point for every foul after 7 team fouls
  • In the event of a draw in a pool game, NO extra time will be played and each team will be awarded 2 points
  • Should there be a draw to decide placings for play-offs:
    1. Draw between 2 teams – who bet who. (IF NO DECISION) the points for and against for ALL pool games
    2. Draw between 3 or more teams – points for and against just between the teams tied (IF NO DECISION) if it comes down to two teams then who bet who – if there is no decision between 3 or more teams then points for and against for ALL pool games.

Extra time WILL BE required in the event of equal points at full time as follows;

  • Immediately following the end of regulation time, the referee shall toss a coin. The winner of the coin toss chooses to either start extra time with possession OR their team’s direction of play
  • The first team to score a try in this period of play will be declared the winner
  • In the interest of player safety, should neither team score in this period the team to have scored first in normal period of play will be declared the winner
